A Shrike, Albert and a Caspian Tern in Notts - 2nd July 2022

After a very poor view of the Black-browed Albatross at Bempton, a Red-tailed Shrike just south of the reserve seemed like a good excuse to give Albert another go.ppl

The shrike was perched up on cue as I parrived, but remained in the hedgerow somewhat distantly and a very poor record shot only was obtained.

With the shrike in the bag, I walked back to Staple Newk and people were watchingp

the albatross some way out. I thought it was going to be a replay of the previous year, but it proceeded to gain height before doing an amazing fly past of the viewing point.  Amazing bird!

On the way back we dropped into North Notts for one of the rare long-staying Caspian Terns.  The bird was along the excellent Slaynes Lane, which is becoming one of the foremost sites in the county.  I watched the bird at clos(ish) range and it was nice to see it both on the deck and in flight.
